- "Accept" as the only visible option
- Continued browsing treated as consent (this isn't valid under GDPR)
- Cookie walls that block content unless all cookies are accepted (controversial and risky)
How to Implement Cookie Consent Correctly
Step 1: Audit Your Cookies

Showing only an "Accept" button with no clear way to reject cookies violates GDPR. Reject must be as easy as accept.
Loading Cookies Before Consent
Many sites show a consent banner but load analytics and advertising cookies regardless. This defeats the entire purpose and is a violation.
"By continuing to browse, you accept cookies"
Implied consent through continued use is not valid consent under GDPR. You need an active, affirmative action (clicking a button).
Burying the Reject Option
Making "Accept" a bright, prominent button while hiding "Reject" in small gray text is a dark pattern. Regulators are increasingly cracking down on this.
Not Respecting Choices
If a user rejects analytics cookies but you load Google Analytics anyway, you're not compliant. Test your implementation regularly.
